Not to mention, Ollie's older brother was a police officer, which his classmates thought gave him easier access to their background information (i.e. their secrets). Nobody knew about Makani's relationship with Ollie, and even though she tried to brush off her friends' warnings, she got spooked when Ollie revealed that he knew her real name was Makani Sun-Woo. Ollie also carried a Taser, which was part of the killer's M.O.

Hopefully, we'll continue to see experimental takes on the slasher genre, and have more great titles like "There's Someone Inside Your House" to enjoy in the future. (Laughs.) I always get these kismet connections to my characters in some way. It’s really dope, and I’m just grateful for all of the experiences.

Who is behind the mask(s)?
Despite initially appearing poised to repeat this too-cool-for-school mistake, “Someone” moves past it by emphasizing not vengeance but redemption. As with nearly every other teen-centric slasher this side of “Scream,” “There’s Someone Inside Your House” takes great pains to avoid the unpardonable sin of sincerity — at least at first. The film’s tongue is planted firmly in its cheek, its characters occasionally act as though they know they’re in a scary movie, and you can’t tell whether you’re supposed to cringe or cheer when yet another teen is offed.

‘There’s Someone Inside Your House’ Ending Explained: Who Is the Killer?
It's also wildly inconsistent with its gimmick, messaging, and tone, wanting to be a Scream-style meta mystery, a Heathers-style high school satire, and a dramatic redemption story all at once. It's so algorithmically thrown together that even the titular premise/promise -- of someone being in someone's house -- doesn't even hold for more than one kill. In "There's Someone Inside Your House," it appears that everyone has deep, dark secrets, including those who you'd least expect. Thankfully, Makani's friends reassure her that her mistake doesn't define her as a person, and we see a glimmer of hope for redemption in Makani's future. So I understood the rhythm, and Santa Clarita Diet was this single-camera show that was written like a sitcom.
It’s psychological and it’s really dark in its tone. But then it’s got these woven scenes of love and insecurities of being a teenager. And then of course, the fun element of a teen slasher film.

There's Someone Inside Your House is a teen slasher flick that hit Netflix just in time for blood-thirsty Halloween viewers. But when students start getting murdered, exposing the teens' darkest secrets, the whole town of Osborne is on edge. The Walking Dead's Sydney Park stars as Makani, a girl who's recently moved to town, escaping a recent, tragic event who, like everyone else, becomes the target of this masked assailant because... Again though, Makani, and her band of outcast friends, are apparently just as vulnerable as the killer's first two victims, who are a nasty prejudiced people. And all the while the film plays the Red Herring shell game to the point where the killer really can't be anyone except the one person that doesn't make any damn sense. At the end of the film, Makani, Ollie, and their friends head to the school's fall festival to try to thwart the killer, who they realize is going to strike there next.
What Happened To Zach?
So who was the serial killer bent on revealing the Osborne students' biggest secrets? Zach Sandford, one of Makani's friends and son of the businessman who was bankrupting the town, was revealed to be the murderer in a surprising and amusing twist. When Makani and Ollie ran into the burning corn fields to find Zach and save their friend, they witnessed Mr. Sandford being stabbed through the face. The killer then realized he forgot to give Sandford his big speech before killing him, and Zach took off his mask in frustration, revealing to his friends that he was the killer.

Zach stabbed Ollie and then told Makani how he was going to frame her for the murders. An injured Ollie got the taser to work, and while he missed Zach, it was enough of a distraction that Makani was able to overtake Zach, and she stabbed him. She said blaming others because he was born privileged made no damn sense and she didn't need a mask to show him who he really was. Then she drove the blade into his body, killing him. The opening credits showed the unseen killer scanning yearbook photos of his classmates and using the images to create 3D masks of his would-be victims' faces. Zach then wore the masks when taking out his classmates, making it appear like they were their own murderer.

Makani was charged and went to trial, but was later acquitted, and her parents sent her to live in Nebraska to start over. Like other thrilling slashers, "There's Someone Inside Your House" follows Sydney as she and her surviving friends try to piece together the mystery before it's too late. With plenty of shocking revelations and twists, "There's Someone Inside Your House" keeps you on your toes until the very end, and the murderer's identity is probably one you won't see coming.
If it was up to you, would you have preferred to not know the killer’s identity until the day you shot the reveal scene? I would be so worried about tipping my hand, inadvertently, in an earlier scene. Shifting to There’s Someone Inside Your House, there’s a unique vibe to this movie that sets it apart from its predecessors, and I think it’s because the tone parallels the personality of your character, Makani. The movie is a bit melancholy, distant and pensive like her, and the tonal/character change at the very, very end seems to support this theory as well. Maybe this is a product of the movie’s nature as an adaptation, but there’s never really a moment in “There’s Someone Inside Your House” that suggests its protagonists are real enough to be worth rooting for.
I was like, “Fuck, am I going to seem unprofessional if I tell them that I showed up hungover? ” (Laughs.) And so I went to this crazy studio so far out; it’s like an hour away. So I was around all of these weird scans, and I was like, “Guys, I’m feeling like shit.” So they had a banana and a coffee mug for me. We’re going to get your face.” So everybody got 3D scanned, and then our special effects and makeup departments ended up making multiples of each character’s mask. There was one that was specifically for camera so it looked super, super close to the character, and then another one was for our stunt performers in case the mask broke or fell off during a stunt.
Of course, Ollie is actually not the killer; instead, it's someone who was in plain sight all along. Makani spends much of the movie walking on eggshells, trying to distance herself from a revealing trauma, but also keeping her and Ollie’s relationship something of a secret (though they make out in his car a couple of times). Park’s certainly charismatic enough to carry her scenes, and for a while it’s easy to follow Makani as she struggles to keep a low profile. But there’s not much to Makani beyond Park’s suggestive performance, least of all Makani’s threadbare and mostly implied relationship with her sleepwalking grandma (BJ Harrison), or her cute, but unremarkable thing with Ollie. Based on the 2017 book by Stephanie Perkins of the same name, There’s Someone Inside Your House was adapted for the screen by Henry Gayden and directed by Patrick Brice.
They talk a lot about hiding their true selves from each other, but often don’t seem human enough to be credibly shallow. According to Makani, she was a cheerleader at her old school, and the younger girls were forced to attend a bonfire and drink until they were on the verge of blacking out. At one point, one of the other cheerleaders named Jasmine (Tally Rodin) pushed Makani drunkenly, and an equally-inebriated Makani pushed back — only Jasmine accidentally fell into the fire and was severely burned.
(Laughs.) It was the scariest day of my mom’s life, as she always likes to remind me. There's Someone Inside Your House is streaming now on Netflix. Once you're done with that, here are some more 2021 Netflix movies for you to check out, as well as these 2021 new movie releases.
